I Need Some Help Here

Although I don’t have kids, I was still interested in I Need Some Help Here!: Hope for When Your Kids Don’t Go According to Plan by Kathi Lipp. The book has 12 different chapters which include You Are Not the Only One, When My Child is Troubled, When My Child is Running Away from God, and When My Child is Left Out. I really liked that each of these chapters felt personal because there were stories included that show an example of others going through that particular situation. I also liked the Biblical focus with Bible Verses throughout the chapters.

This book felt really personal and realistic about what you can face when you are a parent. It gave great advice that will be helpful for anyone who already has children or is expecting children in the near future. I can’t wait to share this book with some of my friends who have young children.

I Quit Sugar

I recently started trying to cut out the sugar in my diet, since I noticed I tend to get headaches when I eat too much sugar. I was really excited to get to read I Quit Sugar: Your Complete 8 Week Detox Program and Cookbook by Sarah Wilson to try and help me eliminate sugar from my diet. This was a good book with recipes that are helpful in getting sugar out of your diet. Although I don’t think I could follow the recipes 100% of the time, they are a good starting point for helping someone eliminate or lessen their sugar intake. I haven't been using this cookbook long enough to know if it will completely eliminate my headaches, but I'm hopeful it will help.

In addition to the recipes being good, I really liked the photos in this book. Even if you aren’t cutting out sugar, this is a great addition to your cookbook collection for many of the recipes in the book.

A Woman of Fortune

Imagine thinking you have the perfect life, husband, and children, and then one day learning your whole life was a lie. This is just what happened to Claire Massey in A Woman for Fortune by Kellie Coates Gilbert. While attending a fancy fundraiser for their soon to be son-in-law, Tuck Massey is arrested, while his wife Claire is left to try and salvage the life they created together. Tuck soon pled guilty to fraud. He stole millions from their friends, family, and church. Claire must struggle with overcoming his deception and trying to hold their family together.

I really liked this book, and the characters were more interesting to me than I thought they would be. Sometimes when you read books about people who have everything, and then lose it, they tend to be not very likable. This is not at all the fact with Claire Massey. She realizes she had a very privileged life, and she is willing to work to do whatever it takes to be self-sufficient while her husband is in prison. I won’t give away the ending, but Claire really struggled with whether she should stay with her husband or not. I think this seemed like a really real emotion, as I would struggle with the same thing if I found out someone I thought I knew was lying to me for a large part of our relationship.

This was a great book, and I look forward to reading more in the Texas Gold Novel series.

Finding Spiritual Whitespace

I normally read historic fiction books, so I decided to read a different type of book with Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul to Rest by Bonnie Gray. Bonnie Gray was able to give readers an inside look at her life through telling stories from her childhood and the struggles she faces with panic attacks. She then relates this to her need to find whitespace, and just rest, following her PTSD. Even if you don’t have the same experiences as Bonnie did, I think readers can pick pieces from this book that they can implement in their own lives to allow their relationship with God grow.

The set-up of this book makes it a good selection for a group discussion, or a personal devotional type book, since there are portions at the end of each chapter that has questions for the reader to ask themselves.

Brunette Ambition

Brunette Ambition, by Lea Michele, from Glee is a great summer read to get some lifestyle tips for the summer season. Although I don’t watch Glee, I really like Lea Michele’s music, so I thought I’d read this book. It was really a good book that combined memoir with an overall style guide. The chapters are broken down into things like The Biz, Red Carpet Fashion, Hollywood Glam, Friendship, My Life with Glee, and Living the Fit Life. There are some really good tips in this book.

I think my favorite thing about this book is that Lea Michele does not come off as “better than” her readers. She didn’t seem to be talking about things that are above what normal people can afford or learn how to use. I think anyone would enjoy this book, but it would especially be of interest for people who are fans of Glee.

While Love Stirs

Charlotte Gregory, in Lorna Seilstad’s newest book, While Love Stirs, is a young girl who just graduated from Fannie Farmer’s School of Cookery. She soon finds herself giving cooking demonstrations on the gas stove, while lecturing and traveling the country since she was unable to find a chef position in any kitchen. As you can imagine in a historical romance book, she finds herself torn between two different men. Lewis is also working at the demonstrations she gives-he is a singer. They get along great but have no chemistry. On the other hand, there is Dr. Joel Brooks. Dr. Brooks and Charlotte fight constantly, but you can tell they have feelings for one another.

This book was great, and the characters were really entertaining. I liked that it was a nice, easy read while still being entertaining. The relationship between the characters really interested me, and I wanted to see Dr. Brooks and Charlotte together from the first interaction I read about between the two. Although this is not the first book in the series, you do not have to read the others to easily follow the story.

Avenged

Avenged, by Janice Cantore, is a book in the Pacific Coast Justice series, that follows spouses Officer Carly Edwards (a police officer in the city of Las Playas) and Sergeant Nick Anderson (a detective in the gang unit). After Carly and her partner find a gang shooting, she and Nick work together to find out the reason for this killing, which seems to be pointing to keeping Carly from testifying in court. Add in a lot of drama and suspense, as Carly has to fight to keep her name clear after she is accused of murder, and Nick is kidnapped.

I really enjoyed this book, and the fact that it had just the perfect amount of suspense. I also liked the fact that it was written by a retired police officer. This made me believe the suspense and situations were more realistic to what police officers go through on a daily basis.
